Women are celebrating at-home cervical cancer screening, but might it lead them to get fewer checkups?

Pap smears must be a strong contender for the worst best thing to happen to gynecology.

The test, alongside HPV vaccinations, functioned as the lynchpin of a prevention program that has dramatically reduced the incidence of cervical cancer in the United States. A 2018 estimate found that pap test screening alone led to a reduction of up to half a million cases of cervical cancer over three decades.
